Doctor Who Series 1, Episode 2, The End of the World
Original Air Date: 2nd April 2005
"I'm a Time Lord. I'm the last of the Time Lords."
A Doctor Who post a day keeps the end of the world at bay, as the well known saying goes.
Here is day two of my Doctor Who posting, counting down until the show is back on our televisions. Bearing in mind I was chatting about how shit the world is right now in my Rose review, how fitting is it that our next stop is the one that ended the world in a ball of flames.
When I rewatched this all I could think about is how giddy people must have been watching this when it first aired, I was giddy watching it now, all those viewings and years later.
Straight from the off, the premise of Doctor Who is set. Do you want to go back in time or into the future? Plus, do you want to take on silly aliens made out of stretched skin?! Rose and the Doctor head off to the very, very far future to watch the end of the World. Not that Rose had much say in it.
"I'm talking to a twig."
We are introduced to a lot of aliens, and it is pure joy. We don’t get to spend much time with them, apart from the trees, but it really is a look at the weird and wonderful of this show. This is actually one of my favourite parts. The interactions between Jabe and the Doctor are great, all that flirting before the shit hits the very large fan. Poor Jabe!!

This episode shows how bonkers Doctor Who is. There are living, talking trees, big faces in jars, blue hosts, and then there is Lady Cassandra. Doctor Who in a nutshell. I wonder how the internet would have taken to Lady Cassandra now? She mentions how she lived as a little boy after all. Scrap that, it would have gone down like a shit sandwich with people calling for the show to be cancelled! #RIP Doctor Who, etc, etc.
Anyway, forget the ‘anti woke’ brigade, because this was a fun episode. The stakes didn't feel particularly high, mainly down to the villain being a flap of skin with some lipstick. It is easy to forget just how much fun series 1 was, and it is still terrific Doctor Who with some really great moments. Rose realising she didn't know anything about the Doctor, Rose calling her Mum, Rose talking about nobody actually seeing the Earth burn. Don't forget "then stop wasting time, Time Lord" as well.
"What you gonna do? Moisturise me?"
This is not an all time classic, but it did a great job at the start of the run, and gave a glimpse into what travelling with the Doctor would be like.
Once Lady Cassandra has been defeated, we are treated to a spectacular goosebump inducing scene where the Doctor first talks about his people and the Time War. What is this Time War? Oh, and what did that alien mention earlier in the episode? Something about Bad Wolf, maybe I should remember that.
What did you think of The End of the World? Is Cassandra an icon? Let me know in the comments below.
