Doctor Who Series 2, Episode 3, School Reunion
Original Air Date: 29th April 2006
"John Smith. I used to have a friend who sometimes went by that name.”
I am not old enough to remember Sarah Jane the first time around, but this one still manages to give me the feels!
First things first, do kids get eaten much in Doctor Who? That doesn't happen very often does it?
Anthony Head is clearly having a lot of fun in this and I love him for it. The CGI may not hold up so well these days, but the Krillitanes are still very fun aliens. They aren't the most memorable, but then this episode isn't really about them.
It is all about Sarah Jane, and the one scene that takes this episode up a notch is when she sees the Tardis and the Doctor says hello. The music is amazing, the acting is amazing, everything is amazing. Even if you had no idea who Sarah Jane was, I still think you'd get the feels watching it.
"It’s very well-behaved, this place. I thought there would be happy slapping hoodies. Happy slapping hoodies with ASBOs. Happy slapping hoodies with ASBOs and ringtones. Yeah? Yeah? Oh yeah! Don’t tell me I don’t fit in.”
Rose is a bit of a grump in this one. I understand that Rose is still young, and I understand that people get jealous, but she is pretty nasty about it at first. I thought she was better than that. If you compare how she treats Sarah Jane in this episode, to how she acts with Reinette in the next it is chalk and cheese. I will get to that though.
I am not sure why, but Rose grated on me in this. She was a nob to Mickey again as well. The bloke helped you become the Bad Wolf and save the world only a few episodes ago… cut him some slack.
Come to think of it, he helped save the world at Christmas as well. Poor bloke. He can't get enough of it can he?
“Oh my God, I'm the tin dog.”
Mickey learns he is the tin dog, and finally gets to travel in the Tardis, despite Rose not being keen on the idea.
The kids are a bit irritating as well, but that doesn't take away from the true heart of the episode. The Doctor and Sarah Jane reminiscing in the coffee shop, Sarah Jane talking about her struggles without the Doctor being two of them.
This leads to a great ending between Sarah Jane and Rose, and then a cosy moment of the Doctor finally saying goodbye and leaving K9 as a present.
"You can spend the rest of your life with me, but I can’t spend the rest of mine with you. I have to live on. Alone. That’s the curse of the Time Lords.”
A fun and heart warming episode, with not a happy slapping hoody in sight.
